At a time when pessimism about our current world order is at an all-time high, this book overturns widespread assumptions that international relations is mainly about conflict, power, and national self-interest. In the last 10-20 years, scientists have discovered that as a species, we are biologically hard-wired, soft-wired, and pre-wired to be other-regarding and cooperative. Humans are an ultrasocial species, and yet this predisposition is completely ignored in governments across the world. Political leaders, experts, and the media have cultivated a myopic vision of global conflict, feeding an obsession on crises of the moment, rather than recognizing frequent and significant breakthroughs in peaceful cooperation and overall trends in the decline of violence. This book shows how time and time again our ultrasocial predisposition has pushed us towards big ideas that inspire and bring us together around the power of possibility. Featuring original research on international cooperation in outer-space exploration, European Union integration, nuclear weapons, and climate change, among other examples, Mai'a K. Davis Cross shows ultrasociality at work in a range of contexts. Tracing the path from social neuroscience and evolutionary biology (among others) to the power of ideas to international agreements, International Cooperation Against All Odds opens up an entirely new understanding of world politics. Although all cultures and nationalities suffer from such downfalls because of such a melting pot society we live in, any man, woman, or child is capable of falling victim to Lynch's negative behavioral application. Depending on the data from the WEF, five African nations have been chosen. These are in detail South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mauritius and Egypt. The main goal of this paper was to analyze these countries in their competitiveness and benchmark them as an example for other African nations. Therefore this paper first gives an overview on the current political situation, the geographical conditions and the historic background to each country. Each country then is analyzed in the primary, secondary and tertiary sector and gives details on the main economical challenges of each country. The benchmarking deals with the performance in different categories which are Government Efficiency, Business Efficiency, Economic Performance and Infrastructure. The paper on hand comes to the conclusion that the selected five countries are indeed very competitive countries within the African continent. They all have dealt with problematic fields of their economy in the past in their individual way and thus improved their performance. The majority of these five countries still have to work harder on these problematic areas to reach a worldwide competitive level, some of them have already reached this level to some extent. The necessary background information and statistics have been taken from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and various reliable internet resources. The paper on hand analyses the data within the past 16 years or more, depending on the question analysed.

"The purity and coolness of the island - because Iceland is very cool and hip these days." Though this statement is refered to the water product, it demonstrated the high interest in the island itself. As many know, Iceland is the country where one can witness the phenomenons of Mother Nature: tremendous icecaps and several glaciers, raging rivers and magnificent waterfalls, spouting geysers and steaming solfatara, volcanoes, a multitude of birds and whales. The spectacular landscape is one reason why Iceland's tourism is successful. But in recent years Iceland also drew the attention of many industries to itself. For example, many technological and telecommuniational products have been outsourced in Europe towards Iceland as it provides many competitive advantages in these fields. Iceland is unique: it is the smallest economy in the world that has its own currency and a flexible exchange rate. It is also an advanced country with excellent institutions meaning low corruption index, the rule of law, a highly educated population and more (cf. Iceland Chamber of Commerce 2006). For most of the 1990s the island presented one of the highest consistent growth rates in the world and low inflation and unemployment. Particularly the resource management in the mainstay fisheries sector, price stability and diversification of the industry contributed to this economic record. The paper on hand gives an outline of the country. To begin with general information about the island is described. This includes demographic as well as historical and political aspects. The third chapter sketches the development and structure of the Icelandic economy. Current economic situation and main economic sectors are content of this section. Furthermore, the culture is described with the three pillars being religion, language and common history. Also the cultural dimensions of Hostede are analysed for Iceland. Moreover this paper provides an overview of the Icelandic education system. Finally upcoming topics and problems will be mentioned.
